One of the more interesting themes that I saw particularly in chapter 13 this week was the increased unrest within China and the spreading of the different ideologies throughout the Chinese population.

The first of the ideologies that was introduced in the chapter was social Darwinism. This was an ideology that supported the idea of ‘survival of the fittest’ within societies social structure. This was a movement that first started in Japan and spread to the United States, the UK and a number of other countries. Such beliefs supported the class stratification and claimed such inequalities between classes to be caused by natural forces. This ideology also resulted in the creation of other more extreme classes of such beliefs such as eugenics, which was one of the foundations that supported Nazi Germany’s actions.

Chinese Communist Party
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Chinese_Communist_Party

The next of the ideologies mentioned in basic set this week was Marxism. This ideology is something that I have been very interested to read about as it is still obviously something that China is associated with today. In theory communism has to most appealed to them in some degree (i.e. equality of all people) but it is something that has never worked practically (at least not in my opinion). Reading about its beginnings within Peking university was almost a shock to me as being in university now I couldn’t even imagine how I would organize such events and promote such a foreign ideology. Also learning about their protesting of the treaty of Versailles was something that I would have never imagined university students would play a role in spear heading.

In addition to this as I have, in the past, studied the communist movement within Russia and found it quite interesting to hear about Lenin’s initial support for the Chinese Communist Party and their sending of support to China in 1920. Being able to connect the Lenin and those events that were taking place in Russia during this time gave me world perspective, that I didn’t previously have of the growth of communism during this period. The appreciation of my knowledge to this degree has also helped me to better understand the propaganda that was published during this time by the ‘Western world’ and that I have studied in the past.

I am very excited about the second half of the semester and for us to continue learning about the Chinese Communist Party.

Source:

Spence, Jonathan D. The Search for Modern China.
